The battle of smartphone market dominance once again sees Samsung trump its main rival, Apple. According to research firm TrendForce, Samsung sold around 10 million units of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, with the Korean company shipping a total of 81 million smartphones in Q1 2016. This allowed Samsung to capture 27.8% of the market share, a rise of 2.5 percent from the previous quarter.
During this same time period, Apple managed to sell about half as many iPhones (42 million), and thus captured 14.4% of the market share. The slowing sales of iPhones did hurt Apple’s shipments, as the company posted its largest quarterly decline ever: 75 million in Q4, 2015 to 42 million in Q1, 2016. Huawei, Lenovo, Xiaomi and LG followed the market leaders with 9.3%, 5.8%, 5.5% and 5.1% market share respectively. Whether Samsung and Apple lead their competitors in technology is debatable, however it is evident that both, are far ahead of others in terms of sales volume of their smartphones. For Samsung, this is an especially commendable win, given that just 3 months back the difference between them and Apple was only 1.2%. Though the whopping 13% increase cannot be attributed solely to the launch of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, these devices have helped Samsung repair its image and lead the global smartphone market once again. Do you think Samsung will continue its market dominance or will it be trumped by Apple once the iPhone 7 launches? Let us know in the comments.
