Apart from falling profits, Samsung also lost market share for the first time in recent history in the recently ended Q2 of 2014. While the Korean giant remained the no. 1 OEM in terms of smartphones shipped, its market share has taken a serious nosedive.  According to IDC, Samsung managed to ship 74.3 million units in the last quarter compared to the 77.3 million units in the same period last year. The company’s market share went from down 32.3 percent to 25.2 percent, thanks to the poor performance in Q2 of 2014. On the bright side, Samsung managed to ship millions of units of the Galaxy S5, even though it was not particularly well received by critics. The company’s last year flagships — the Galaxy S4 and S3 — are also doing well in the market despite their age. Samsung has been facing stiff competition from many Chinese OEMs who have eaten into its low-end market share. With companies like OnePlus and Xiaomi selling high-end spec’d phones at mid-range prices, the company’s high-end smartphones sales are also taking a beating. The release of the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA next month should help Samsung in reclaiming some of its lost market share.
